What is Stone Disease in Children?
Stone disease in children is the formation of stones from mineral crystals in the kidney, ureter or bladder. Paediatric kidney and urinary stones may present with age-related abdominal or flank pain, blood in the urine, nausea-vomiting, irritability or UTI. Ultrasound is first-line; low-dose imaging may be used when needed. Treatment is planned by stone size and location, symptoms, infection or obstruction and the child’s age, using observation or endoscopic methods. Underlying causes are investigated and follow-up arranged to reduce recurrence.
